Loretta's Babies

These are pictures taken at 8 weeks of age.  Some of the pups were more cooperative than others.  I'll try to replace some pictures with better ones when the puppies get better on the table.  The problem was that no one was afraid of the table - they refused to be intimidated by being up high.  Lovely temperaments on these babies.

Yes, Rube and Paris are the "pinks" everyone talks about.  No, you aren't supposed to get them from a tri-to-tri breeding, but here they are.  They are the darkest I've ever produced and frankly, are the same color as normal reds the same age.  However, they were born almost white, and as you can see from their pictures, they don't have the normal black guard hairs that all normal red babies have.

The appearance of the cream-colored puppies in this litter brings up a whole lot of questions about our understanding of the chinchilla gene (that theoretically causes the creams in red and brindle breedings) and how it does or doesn't affect black hair.  Or, this color may not be caused by chinchilla at all.  Further investigation is underway and I'll report back.
